Hidden gems in Marrakesh, beyond Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks
Published 5 June 2026
Quick answer
- -Le Jardin Secret, a 16th century palace garden hidden behind a souk wall.
- -Sidi Ghanem industrial design district, where the riads buy their furniture.
- -Henna Cafe in the medina, the only place to get henna without a hard sell.
- -Cafe Clock for camel burgers and storytelling nights.
- -Hammam Mouassine for the local hammam experience, around 8 euros.
Le Jardin Secret
Down a small alley in the souk, behind a plain door, the 16th century palace gardens of Le Jardin Secret split between an Islamic garden and a more recent European-influenced garden. Climb the tower for views over the medina. Almost no Western tourists. Entry around 7 euros, takes 45 minutes.
Sidi Ghanem design district
A 25 minute taxi north of the medina, Sidi Ghanem is a sprawl of warehouses turned into showrooms for the designers and craftsmen the riads buy from. Carpets, leather, ceramics, woodwork, at much better prices than the souks. Not many tourists make the trip. Half a day if you commit.
Henna Cafe in the medina
A small social enterprise inside the medina that trains young women in henna art. The henna designs are real, the prices are fixed and reasonable (no hard sell), and the cafe upstairs serves Moroccan mint tea with a view over the rooftops.
Cafe Clock
A storytelling cafe in the Kasbah neighborhood, doing nightly hakawati (traditional Arabic storytelling) sessions in English. The camel burger is the cult dish (it is camel meat, it tastes like beef, it is good). Casual atmosphere, the trip memorable evening.
Hammam Mouassine
For under 10 euros at this neighborhood hammam, you get a steam, a scrub, and the local hammam experience. No spa towels, no aromatherapy, just the basics that have been the basics for 800 years. Bring a swimsuit. Go in the late afternoon when locals go.
Bahia Palace at opening
Bahia Palace is on every guide but by 11am it is mobbed. Arrive at 9am opening and the tiled courtyards are essentially empty. The light hits the carved cedar ceilings perfectly in the early hours. Takes 90 minutes.
Frequently asked
Where do you get henna in Marrakesh without scams?
Henna Cafe in the medina has fixed prices and trained practitioners (it is a social enterprise). Most street henna in Jemaa el-Fnaa uses chemical dyes that can cause skin reactions and the prices balloon mid-application.
Is Sidi Ghanem worth the taxi ride?
If you are shopping for serious souvenirs (carpets, lighting, leather), yes. Better quality and better prices than the souks. If you just want trinkets, the souks are fine.
Local hammam or spa hammam?
Both work for different reasons. Local hammam (Hammam Mouassine) is around 8 euros for the cultural experience. Spa hammam (La Mamounia, Royal Mansour) is around 80 to 150 euros for the elevated version. Many crews do one of each.
What is the best secret garden in Marrakesh?
Le Jardin Secret in the medina (a 16th century palace garden). Jardin Majorelle gets the Instagram traffic, Le Jardin Secret has the quieter, equally beautiful version with a tower view.
