Portugal, Group trip planner

Plan a group trip to Porto.

Steeper than Lisbon, cheaper than Lisbon, and full of port the locals do not drink.

Porto is half the price of Lisbon and the locals quietly resent the comparison. Cards work in most restaurants but the small tascas and bifanas counters still want cash, pull €80 to €120 per person from a Multibanco ATM. Locals do not drink port (that is the export), they drink vinho verde and Super Bock beer. Dinner starts at 8pm here, earlier than Lisbon, and the menu do dia at lunch is the unbeatable deal at €7 to €10. The Ribeira riverside is beautiful and a tourist tax in restaurant form; eat one street back.

Hidden corners worth knowing the names of

Not the headlines. The spots Portolocals reach for after the famous ones are done, and that Agoroam quietly seeds into your group's deck when you start planning.

  1. 1

Capela das Almas at golden hour

Blue-tile church on Rua de Santa Catarina, locals walk past it daily, photographers miss it.

  2. 2

Foz do Douro on the Atlantic

Tram 1 to the river mouth, beach bars, surfers, the local Sunday move.

  3. 3

Mercado do Bolhão after the renovation

The working market reopened in 2022, lunch upstairs for €10, the deli counters know foreigners are coming.

  4. 4

    A Pérola do Bolhão

A 1917 grocery shop with original tile work, buy port and tinned fish, the owner remembers regulars.

  5. 5

    Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

Hilltop gardens with peacocks and the best free river view in the city.

Best time to go

May, June, September, October. July and August are warm but cruise ships clog Ribeira; winter is rainy and grey but the wine cellars are calmer.
