Best European Christmas markets

Published 5 June 2026

Quick answer

  • -Strasbourg is the oldest Christmas market in Europe, 600 years old.
  • -Vienna has 15 concurrent markets, the most concentrated experience.
  • -Nuremberg is the most famous but smaller than expected.
  • -Tallinn and Krakow for the cheap version with equal charm.
  • -Most markets run late November through December 23, some until January 6.

Strasbourg, the oldest

The Christkindelsmärik in Strasbourg has been running since 1570. Around 300 stalls across 12 markets in the city, the main one at Place Broglie. Mulled wine (vin chaud), gingerbread (pain d'epices), and Alsatian specialties. Late November to December 30.

Vienna, the most concentrated

15 Christmas markets run concurrently across Vienna. The Rathausplatz market is the biggest, the Spittelberg market is the cozier alternative, and the Karlsplatz market has the best food. Late November through December 26, some run to January 6.

The German classics

Beyond Nuremberg (which is famous but smaller than expected):

  • -Dresden Striezelmarkt, the oldest German market (1434), in the rebuilt baroque centre
  • -Cologne, four markets concurrently, the Cathedral one is the cinematic version
  • -Munich Marienplatz, classic Bavarian atmosphere, gluhwein and Lebkuchen
  • -Aachen, the medieval town hall market is small but extraordinary
  • -Rothenburg ob der Tauber for the storybook Christmas village version

Prague and Krakow for value

For the same Christmas market experience at half the price:

  • -Prague Old Town Square, the medieval setting, fewer crowds than Vienna
  • -Krakow Main Square, the cheapest of the major Christmas markets
  • -Budapest Vorosmarty Square, smaller but excellent gluhwein and Hungarian sausages
  • -Tallinn Town Hall Square, the oldest in Northern Europe, snow almost guaranteed

The Strasbourg base trip

Strasbourg is the best base for a Christmas market trip. Stay 3 nights, do the main market in the city, day-trip to Colmar (the most photogenic small town in Alsace), and Riquewihr or Eguisheim for the small village markets. 5 night maximum.

When markets run

Most European Christmas markets run from the last weekend of November through December 23. Some German markets close December 24. Vienna, Prague, and Innsbruck markets often extend through January 6. Mid-week mornings (Tuesday to Thursday before 5pm) have the fewest crowds.
