When is the best time to book a hotel
Published 5 June 2026
Quick answer
- -For peak season (June to August, December), book 90 to 120 days ahead.
- -For shoulder season, 60 days ahead is the sweet spot.
- -For weekday business hotels, 24 to 48 hours often gives the lowest rate.
- -For weekend leisure hotels, book 4 to 8 weeks ahead.
- -Rates can drop 7 to 14 days before arrival, rebook if your reservation is refundable.
The 90 day rule for peak season
In peak European summer (June to August) and Christmas through New Year, book at least 90 days ahead. Inventory at popular hotels gets locked early. Waiting often means choosing between the worst rooms or paying 30 to 60 percent more for a comparable property.
Shoulder season, 60 days ahead
April to May and September to October are the European shoulder seasons. Hotels release inventory more gradually and rates often drop 30 to 50 percent versus peak. Book 60 days ahead for the best mix of selection and price.
Last-minute exception for business hotels
For weekday business hotels in major cities (London, New York, Frankfurt, Singapore), inventory often goes unsold and rates drop 24 to 48 hours before arrival. Apps like HotelTonight catch this. The same hotel that was 250 USD a week ago might be 130 USD on Sunday for a Monday stay.
Refundable rates and rate watching
Book refundable rates when you have time. Then 7 to 14 days before arrival, recheck the same hotel. If the rate has dropped, rebook at the lower rate and cancel the original. This is the single best hack for hotels.
Day of week patterns
Two patterns matter:
- -In business-traveler cities, Tuesday to Thursday is peak. Sunday and Monday are cheap.
- -In leisure cities, Friday and Saturday are peak. Sunday to Tuesday is cheap.
- -Sunday is the universally cheapest night to start a stay.
- -Avoid Friday and Saturday in any leisure destination if you want a deal.
When NOT to book early
If you are flexible on dates and destination, late bookings often give better rates. The exceptions are major events (Olympics, World Cup, peak Christmas) where late means triple price or sold out.
Frequently asked
How far ahead should I book a hotel in peak season?
90 to 120 days for peak European summer (June to August) and Christmas. The inventory at popular hotels gets locked early. Waiting often means worse rooms at higher prices.
Are last-minute hotel deals real?
Yes for business-traveler cities on weeknights. Apps like HotelTonight and the major OTAs often drop rates 24 to 48 hours before arrival when business inventory goes unsold. Less true for leisure destinations and weekends.
Should I book refundable or non-refundable rates?
Refundable for any trip 7+ days out. The 20 to 40 USD per night markup is worth the optionality, plus refundable rates let you rebook if the price drops before arrival.
Why are Sunday nights cheaper at hotels?
Business travelers fly in Monday or Tuesday and leisure travelers fly out Sunday morning, leaving Sunday night under-booked. The same room often runs 20 to 40 percent less for a Sunday start versus Friday.
