How to get a hotel late checkout for free
Published 5 June 2026
Quick answer
- -Ask the morning before checkout, not the day of.
- -Book direct, then ask. OTA bookings have less flexibility.
- -Elite status (Marriott Gold, Hyatt Discoverist) often guarantees 2pm or 4pm checkout.
- -Mention a late flight, especially with a real reason.
- -2pm is usually free, 4pm sometimes, 6pm rarely.
The timing rule
Ask the night before or the morning before checkout, not 10 minutes before noon. Hotels manage room inventory in advance, and a 10am request for a 2pm checkout is harder than a 7am request for the same thing.
The booking channel matters
OTA bookings (Booking.com, Hotels.com) are inventory-locked. The hotel manager has less flexibility. Direct bookings give the manager room to extend. Always book direct when you might need late checkout.
Elite status, the cheapest version
Even casual travelers can get free elite status:
- -Marriott Gold via Amex Platinum cardholders, 2pm checkout guaranteed
- -Hyatt Discoverist after one stay, 2pm checkout guaranteed
- -Hilton Gold via Amex Platinum, late checkout subject to availability
- -IHG Platinum after a few stays, 4pm checkout possible
- -World of Hyatt Globalist (top tier), 4pm checkout guaranteed
The polite ask phrasing
What works:
- -"We have a 6pm flight, would 2pm or 3pm checkout be possible?"
- -"Is there any chance of a late checkout? We would really appreciate it."
- -"We are flying out tonight, what is the latest you can do?"
- -Do NOT say "I deserve" or "I expect", that closes the door
The 4pm and 6pm reality
2pm is usually doable at most hotels for free (a 90 percent success rate with a polite ask). 4pm is harder, often offered to elite status only or for a small fee (20 to 40 USD). 6pm is rare, usually only possible if the room is empty that night.
When you cannot get late checkout
Most hotels offer free luggage storage. You can check out at noon, leave your bags, and use the lobby or hotel lounge until your flight. Many also have day rooms (rent a room for 4 to 6 hours, around 50 to 80 USD) which work for couples wanting a shower and a nap.
Frequently asked
Can hotels charge for late checkout?
Yes. Standard checkout is 11am or noon. Late checkout to 2pm is usually free at most hotels. To 4pm is often 20 to 40 USD. To 6pm or later is half-day or full-day rate. Elite status holders often get later times for free.
Should I book directly or through Booking.com to get late checkout?
Direct gives you more flexibility. OTAs lock the room inventory more strictly. If late checkout matters, book direct or call the hotel after the OTA booking to convert to a direct reservation.
What elite status gives the best late checkout?
World of Hyatt Globalist (top tier, 4pm guaranteed). Marriott Gold or Hyatt Discoverist (mid tier, 2pm guaranteed) via Amex Platinum credit card. The Amex Platinum gets you both immediately.
What if I cannot get late checkout?
Use free luggage storage at the hotel (almost universal), spend the afternoon at the lobby or pool, or rent a day room. Day rooms run 50 to 80 USD for 4 to 6 hours and include the room plus shower facilities.
